Bringing Pets to TaiwanAIT cannot assist or be involved in the process of importing pets to Taiwan. We can, however, provide the following general information. Individuals should begin the steps of pet clearance as soon as possible in the moving process, especially when bringing a pet from a country where rabies is endemic (including the United States). Pets are not allowed to be imported into Taiwan if they were shipped from China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau), Singapore, Malaysia and Bangladesh or transited through those countries. Additionally, a cat is not allowed to be transshipped through Australia. The permit, medical, and laboratory process for importing pets is quite detailed and is subject to time restrictions. The cost of importation of pets into Taiwan is expensive and some people choose to use a forwarding agent to clear and transport the pet to the quarantine station. AIT does not have referral information on such agents. Along with original veterinary certificate and reports of rabies tests, owners will need an Import Permit. Permits are issued by the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan. For import via Taoyuan International Airport, owners should submit applications to the Hsinchu Branch, Tel: 886-3-3982663; email: hc04@mail.hcbaphiq.gov.tw. Application forms are available at http://www.baphiq.gov.tw/ and may be submitted by email to the address above. Import Permits may be required by airlines before boarding. Taking Pets to the U.S. from TaiwanAIT cannot help with arrangements to take your pet back to the U.S. but we do have some links that may prove useful to you. The U.S. agency that regulates the importation of pets to the U.S. is the Centers for Disease Control: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal.htm The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) also has an informative site regarding traveling with pets: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (of the Department of Homeland Security) provides information regarding the importation of pets at: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/prohibited_restricted.xml You should also consult with your airline regarding their regulations, and with your state of residence in the U.S. Any American Citizen Services questions, please send an e-mail to amcit-ait-t@state.gov. |
