Student and Exchange Visitor Visas

Persons applying for a student visa (F-1, F-3, M-1, M-3) or an exchange visitor visa (J-1) with an initial I-20 or DS-2019 form issued on or after September 1, 2004 are required to pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) I-901 fee before making a visa application. The SEVIS I-901 fee supports the SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) office and the automated system that keeps track of students and exchange visitors. This program ensures that they maintain their status while in the United States. If a fee is needed, you must submit your SEVIS fee receipt to the Consular Officer to confirm your payment of the SEVIS fee. The fee is $100 U.S. dollars for most applicants and can be paid online at http://www.fmjfee.com If you have paid the SEVIS fee but decide to study at a different school, you must request for a fee transfer from your previous SEVIS ID number to the new one before applying for a visa. (For more information, click here.) All dependent visa applicants do not have to pay the SEVIS fee. J visa applicants participating in a program who are sponsored by the U.S. Federal Government whose program number begins with “G-1”, “G-2”, “G-3” or “G-7" do not have to pay the SEVIS fee, visa processing fee, and the APC service fee. To see if you need to pay the SEVIS fee and to learn more about the program, click here.

If you have additional questions about the SEVIS I-901 fee, please contact the SEVP program office by phone at (785) 330-1048 for the SEVIS I-901 Fee Payment Help Desk, or by email at fmjfee.sevis@dhs.gov

Please note that an F or M visa can only be issued 120 days or less prior to the designated start/report date indicated on the Form I-20.

To all recipients of an F, M, or J student or exchange visitor visa: Please be aware that United States Department of Homeland Security regulations state that holders of F, M, or J nonimmigrant visas will not be admitted to the United States until a date 30 days or less prior to the beginning of your program date, or start date, as given on your Form I-20 (for F or M visas) or DS-2019 (for J visas). Please consider that date carefully when making your travel plans to the United States.
