Passport Validity and Expired Passports

Passport Validity: Most visa applicants must have a passport valid for at least 6 months past the date of their anticipated departure from the United States. Due to a special agreement between the United States and Taiwan, Taiwan passport holders may enter the United States with passports that will expire in less than 6 months. However, these passport holders will not be permitted to remain in the U.S. beyond the validity of their passports. These passport holders must depart the U.S. before the passport expires, or renew or extend their passports at TECRO in the United States. If you have further questions, please contact your travel agent or airline for information.

Expired Passports: You may continue to use your U.S. visa until the date it expires, even if the visa is in an expired passport. You must travel with the expired passport that contains the valid visa and a new valid passport issued by the same country. It is not possible to "transfer" a currently valid visa into a new passport - You must either travel with two passports or apply for a new visa. Please note "indefinite" visas are now considered ten-year visas by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). All "indefinite" visas expire ten years after the date of issuance.
