2022 OPEN DOORS REPORT
Taiwan Student Numbers in the United States
Bounce Back after COVID’s Impact

According to the 2022 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange data released yesterday by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education, the total number of Taiwan students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities increased in 2021-2022 to 20,487. This 4.1% year on year increase follows annual increases from 2015 to 2019, with a pause in 2019-2021 primarily due to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Taiwan is now the sixth largest source of international students in the United States after seven consecutive years ranked as seventh.

The 2022 Open Doors report highlights that international students are committed to pursuing study in the United States, which remained the top global destination for international students, welcoming over 948,000 international students from over 200 places of origin around the world.

The largest portion of Taiwan students in the United States (43.9%) were enrolled in graduate study, an 11.9% increase from the prior year.  More than 29% of all Taiwan students in the United States were undergraduates, a slight decrease of 0.4% from the prior year. Over 23% of Taiwan students participated in Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs (a decrease of 5.1%).  Nearly 3% of all Taiwan students enrolled in non-degree programs, a significant increase of more than 30% from the previous year.

During the 2021-2022 academic year, the number of U.S. students enrolled for academic credit at colleges or universities in Taiwan dropped by 77.6%. For more data, infographics, and resources, details please visit https://opendoorsdata.org/

The Open Doors Report, compiled annually by the Institute of International Education, is a comprehensive information resource on international students at higher education institutions in the United States, and U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit at colleges or universities.

The release of the 2022 Open Doors Report is a part of International Education Week (IEW), a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote international educational exchange from November 14-18, 2022.
