Earthquake in Hualien April 18, 2019

On April 18, 1:01pm, 2019 a 6.1 magnitude earthquake – centered 10.6 kilometers northwest of Hualien – struck Taiwan’s eastern coast. Please contact Hualien City Offices if you are in need of urgent assistance at (03) 832-2141.

We strongly encourage U.S. citizens in Taiwan to reach out to family and friends directly to assure them you are okay. If you use social media, be sure to update your status. Only if you require emergency medical assistance or need to report a fire, dial 119. If you need emergency police assistance, dial 110.

Taiwan’s National Fire Agency (NFA) confirmed that there were no immediate reports of any major injuries. NFA has dispatched helicopters to survey the quakes’ impact, but its initial assessment was that there was no major damage to infrastructure. Taiwan’s high speed rail network and Taipei’s MRT have suspended operation to survey potential damage.
