Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense announced that the annual Wan An air defense exercises will be conducted in central, southern, and eastern Taiwan from 1:30-2:00 p.m. on July 26, 27, and 28.  On Tuesday, July 26 exercises will be conducted in Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi City, and Chiayi County.  On Wednesday, July 27 exercises will be conducted in Kaohsiung City, Tainan City, and Pingtung County.  On Thursday, July 28, exercises will be conducted in Hualien County, Taitung County, Kinmen County, Lienchiang County, and Penghu County.

During the 30-minute exercises, vehicles including trains will operate as usual at airports, highways, and railways.  However, passengers will not be able to exit the MRT station after they arrive on the train.  Disembarking passengers and cars leaving the highway must follow instructions and either evacuate or shelter accordingly.  Please also note that vehicular movement on Taipei streets will cease during the exercise.  If you are outdoors when the alarm sounds, you will be required to take cover nearby or to pull your vehicle to the side of the road until the drill concludes.  Failure to follow the instructions or directions of military or law enforcement personnel during the exercise will result in fines under Taiwan’s Civil Defense Law.

During the exercises, the emergency notification system will be tested as well, signaling the start and end of the event.

Please plan your schedule accordingly.
