Taiwan’s Newest American Shelf Opens at the Penghu County Library
The American Institute in Taiwan Kaohsiung Branch Office (AIT/K) Branch Chief Thomas Wong and Penghu Magistrate Chen Kuang-fu jointly inaugurated the Penghu American Shelf at Penghu County Library April 20, 2023.
At the opening ceremony, AIT/K Branch Chief Wong said, “Our young people are the world’s future leaders. We hope that this new American Shelf can serve as a bridge to the world for Penghu’s youth, helping them expand their vision, learn about diverse cultures, enhance their competitiveness, and ultimately impact their communities and the globe in a positive way.”
The American Shelf is part of the Department of State’s American Spaces program, which aims to foster greater understanding of American culture and society in local communities. The Penghu American Shelf features story books and collection for children and youth on the United States as well as information about the study and teaching of English and materials on studying in the United States through the U.S. government’s official college advising services, EducationUSA. AIT Kaohsiung will host English-language storytelling programs supported by Fulbright English Teaching Assistants, STEM workshops, and educational and cultural programming at the American Shelf.
AIT has established three American Corners in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. In 2014, the first American Innovation Center in Asia was inaugurated in Taipei. AIT has also teamed up with local partners to set up American Shelves in Taoyuan County, Yilan County, Tainan, Pingtung, and Penghu, and cooperated with the Commonwealth Magazine Education Foundation to provide Mobile American Corner programming all over Taiwan.
